Adios! (+ Vacation Schedule)

Hi and happy last day of November! December is my favorite month (well, tied with June and July anyway; I can’t shake my summer love even during the most wonderful time of the year). I’m so excited to really celebrate the season and get to experience the magic of the holidays through my kids’ eyes. It’s so cliche, I know, but man is it awesome. But before we get into full swing holiday mode, we’re going to spend a few days hanging on the beach. In fact, as you read this we’ll all be on a plane headed down to the Dominican. And because, despite the fact that I feel I’ve come pretty far in just letting things go and remaining present, I’m still a Type A planner by nature and a week away from the office feels like an eternity (a blissful one, but still an eternity), I have a few things I want to share with you guys.

1. VACATION/WORK SCHEDULE: I will be out of the office through next Tuesday morning (December 6th). I will be checking emails but very sporadicly, so if you do contact me, please allow a few days for a response. If you have an urgent matter regarding either the blog or the Bubby and Bean Art shop, you can contact my assistant at morgan (AT) mountainsofthemoon.com.

2. HOLIDAY CARD ORDERS: The Bubby and Bean Art Shop will remain open for orders this week. Any orders placed from today through Sunday December 4th will ship the week of December 5th. Orders will be processed and shipped in the order they are received. Wholesale orders will be be shipped by December 7th.

3. BLOG: Although there will be a couple of days without posts while I’m gone, the blog will remain active. I’m especially excited about tomorrow’s post, which is a post from my heart to kick off Infantile Spasms (the rare type of childhood epilepsy that Emmett has) Awareness Week.

4. FOLLOWING ALONG: If you’d like to follow along with our Dominican adventures, you can do so over on my Instagram or Snapchat (both @bubbyandbean).

I’m laughing out loud reading this because if you guys saw my house or office space, you would likely describe me as the least organized person you’d ever met. But when it comes to planning events, parties, or vacations, I’m meticulous.

I’ll be sending lots of sunshine from Punta Cana! Enjoy the rest of your week!

What I’m Wearing Now: November

Early Winter Casual Wardrobe Staples
1. Plaid Shirt Dress, Target (image above is slightly different; see here for exact dress, of which I now own 3 colors)  //  2. Succulent Earrings, Madewell  //  3. Allie Leather Choker Necklace, Urban Outfitters  //  4. Knit Beanie, Madewell  //  5. Chevron Coat in Black, Garnet Hill  //  6. High Waist Flare Jeans, Target  //  7. Jersey Leggings, H&M  //  8. Lily Tote Diaper Bag, Newlie  //  9. Classic Sheffield Watch, Daniel Wellington  //  10. Fold-Down Combat Boot, Rock & Candy  //  11. Madison Boots, Trask

November 17th was a grand day around here friends, because it was 74 degrees in Chicago. 74. In November. I wore a dress and bare legs and it was glorious. We’re back to cool temps though, which means it was only a brief moment of joy, but I sure did love it. I can’t complain too much about the cold returning, considering I’ll be back in full on summer wardrobe mode in two days when we’re in the Dominican. But as you can see from the clothing pieces above, November has had its chilly moments. (And yes, I once again started off a What I’m Wearing Now post with a discussion on the weather. But that’s how we determine what we’re wearing, which is the whole point of this series, right?)

Once again, I have been wearing this dress (which is only $ 28 you guys) incessantly, in three different colors. They’re still my favorite dresses, and I’ll likely wear them until they fall apart. I’ve also continued to rock the flared jeans on the regular. I did bust out the skinny jeans a couple of times this month, but for the most part, flares and bells have become my go-to.  I also got this coat (and yes that is faux fur, duh) this month, and while it’s a little outside the box of what I’d normally describe as “my style,” I love it. So much. And it’s gonna keep this mama all sorts of warm through what I’m sure will be a hellish winter in Chicago. Truthfully, this month’s wardrobe hasn’t differed much from last, but if December ends up being as cold as it usually is around here, I have a feeling next month will bring a lot more sweaters and its fair share of blanket scarves.

Before I go, I hope those of you here in the states had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend! We did, and as usual, it went by way too fast. Also, in case you missed it, I posted my annual big personal list of Black Friday/Small Business Saturday/Cyber Monday deals last week. Since may of those specials start (and end!) today, it might be worth checking out (right here).

Noticeable Results: Canadian Rescue, VOKRA, Donation Report

VOKRA - kitten rescue in Canada

Vancouver Orphan Kitten Rescue Association (VOKRA) is a volunteer-driven non-profit dedicated to the rescue of cats by having more than 350 individual foster homes throughout the Lower Mainland. They also coordinate rescue work with other groups in BC.

Halo is proud to partner with Freekibble.com and GreaterGood.org to achieve noticeable results for shelter pets together.

Here’s what VOKRA had to say about a recent Halo Pets donation:

VOKRA - kitten rescue in Canada“Having Halo high quality dry food is an enormous help when we bring in stray cats that will only eat dry kibble. While out on the street trying to survive they often eat garbage until they find a kind hearted human who feeds them. Most people buy the least expensive dry food available, and when we finally have the cat in our care they will only eat that type of kibble, which doesn’t provide much nutrition. We’ve had many such cats in our care and as soon as the Halo kibble arrived I started mixing it into these cats dishes and slowly changing them over to the more nutritious Halo.

In October 2015, we were the liaison for the local SPCA and was asked to help at a hoarding site. From Oct 2015 – Apr 2016, we removed 57 kittens and 15 adult cats from one home. The adult cats had only been eating inexpensive dry kibble and quite a few had health issues.

VOKRA - kitten rescue in CanadaWe also did a TNR program at this site and spayed and neutered 32 cats. Some had health issues and needed teeth removed or wounds treated, so we brought them to our VOKRA Operations centre to recover after surgery.

While they were with us we started feeding them with high quality wet food.

Some of the cats didn’t eat at first. I realized that these cats had only ever eaten dry food so I offered Halo’s Spot’s Stew Chicken as well as the Salmon kibble.

We were so happy when they started eating Halo. We saw some definite improvement in the quality of their coats.

A number of these cats were surrendered to VOKRA but when we returned the other cats to the owner I gave her Halo kibble so she would keep feeding it.

She really appreciated all the help and was amazed at the number of bags of Halo food I had brought. It makes us very happy when we can share better quality food with our community and at our rescue.”

Thank you VOKRA for making a noticeable difference for pets in your community.

When you choose Halo pet food, made from natural, whole food ingredients, your pet won’t be the only one with a radiant coat, clear eyes and renewed energy. Halo feeds it forward, donating over 1.5 million meals annually. As always, Halo will donate a bowl to a shelter every time YOU buy.

Friendly Swiss Cat Guides Lost Hiker to Safety

Grimwald Cat

If you sprained your ankle while hiking by yourself, you might get a bit worried. If you then realized that the only trail back was closed, you’d probably get a little scared. However, if you happened to be hiking near the village of Grimmelwald in Switzerland, a local cat might come to your rescue.

According to the Independent, a Hungarian hiker, sc4s2cg posted on Reddit that he was hiking in the mountains around Grimmelwald when he ran into trouble. The route that he meant to take back to the village was marked as closed. With his ankle sprained, the hiker wasn’t sure of a good alternate route.

Then he spotted a cat. Thinking that this might be something to share with his family back home, the hiker began videotaping the encounter. When he shared the story and video on Reddit, he added English subtitles to the adorable video.

A Holiday Window Art Project

I thought Essley was excited for the holidays last year, but this year puts last to shame. She turns 3 on December 28th, and this is the first holiday season where she really gets it. It’s not even Thanksgiving yet and it’s basically all she talks about. From Santa Claus and Christmas trees to holiday songs and movies to holiday treats, she is obsessed. But her favorite holiday symbol, one about which she speaks almost incessantly, is the snowman. And more than anything, she loves to draw snowmen, and for her dad and I to do the same. So I had an idea of how we could incorporate three things she loves – art, holiday decor, and, of course, snowmen – into a fun creative project that would likely blow her little mind.

One morning last weekend, before my husband took her to run some errands, I told Essley to get into the holiday spirit because when she got home, we were going make something fantastic together. She was so excited that she insisted on wearing a holiday dress. (And truth be told, I may have been even more excited about it than she was.) I put on some holiday music, washed the big window/glass door leading to our back porch (because when you have a 10 month old babe and a 2.5 year old toddler, glass without tiny handprints no longer exists), and gathered our supplies: some Crayola Window Markers and the new Crayola Air Marker Sprayer. When she got home and I told her that we were going to airbrush a snowman scene on the window, she started cheering and dancing around the room. It was pretty awesome.

The first thing we did was sat down with our supplies and picked out our colors, and then Essley practiced putting markers into the Air Marker Sprayer. Then we got to it! This thing is the absolute coolest you guys – all you do is plug it in, insert a marker (the spray nozzle is compatible with all Crayola Broad Line Markers, not just the Crayola Window Markers we used), push the on button, and spray. There’s no messy paint involved. Just markers. I was amazed.

We started by making the outline of the snowman together, and then Essley worked on coloring in it. It was obvious that the Air Marker Sprayer was designed with kids in mind – it’s so easy to use and I know that even beyond the holidays (and beyond windows; it can be used on paper and many other mediums to create endless craft projects) it’s going to make for hours of continuous creativity. We didn’t look at any pictures while we designed, and instead just made things up as we went along, which added to the adventure. Essley very endearingly instructed me to add buttons, and a red scarf, and an orange nose, and finally, a big hat. Then she decided we needed some blue snowflakes, of course. It was really fun to experiment with the Air Marker Sprayer and see how moving it close to the window and/or far away could create different effects. Clean up was a breeze too. And for people who had never airbrushed in our lives, I was admittedly impressed with how our snowman turned out. He’s still going strong too. He gets a big hug from Essley in the morning and before bed, and she fondly named him Art Project Frosty, which I think is simply perfect.

Essley and I both had so much fun creating our holiday window display together, and we’re both looking forward to designing another one soon. It was really cool to get to create something holiday themed together that went beyond just a piece of paper, or even traditional holiday decor. And I love that you can see it from outside too!

If you have little ones who are excited for the holidays, and/or if you’re excited for holiday decorating and want to do something unique this year, grab a Crayola Air Marker Sprayer (they’re only is $ 29.99 and come with 5 Pip-Squeaks Markers, 10 sheets of paper, and 2 stencil sheets) and some Crayola Window markers, and decorate your own holiday window. I’d love to see your creations! And if you share them on social media, make sure to tag them with #AirMarkerSprayer for a chance to be featured on Crayola.com. Happy holiday decorating!

This post is in partnership with Crayola. Thank you for supporting the brands that help make Bubby and Bean possible.
