Bowls have been a big trend in healthy eating for years now, and they are a several-meals-a-week staple in our house. You can’t get any easier, really. Just pile some layers of what you have in the fridge into a bowl (keeping in mind to include a variety of healthy foods), and eat it. We tend to stick to what we know though – either this smoothie bowl or one that consists of organic greens, blueberries, pineapple, Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and the occasional avocado or banana, and a dinner bowl that consists of quinoa, black beans, chickpeas, eggs or tofu, greens, avocado, and lots of hot sauce. And while they make for hearty and delicious meals, they can get boring after a while. So I decided to search out some new bowl ideas, and found the recipes above, which all look delicious. I plan on trying #6 and #10 (by my girl Jessica, who just finished writing her first book!) this week.

What is your favorite bowl? Do you prefer sweet ones like smoothie bowls (I do) or more savory varieties?

Links I Love, Right Now

It’s been a few months since my last Links I Love post. I admittedly spend a lot less time on the internet during the summer, and that coupled with the fact that Emmett is nursing less at night (so those periods of random 3 AM surfing are becoming less frequent as well) is likely the reason for which I just haven’t had as many cool links to share lately. Never fear though friends, I’ve got some gems to share today. You may also notice that this is a Thursday, and I usually reserve these posts as end-of-the-week send-offs on Fridays. But the kids and I are headed out on our first road trip without Robbie this morning, for a three day weekend down in Indianapolis. Three and a half hours in the car with the kids by myself could be pretty comical (it could also be torture), so I invite you to come along for the adventure over on my Snapchat (@bubbyandbean) if you’re in the mood to join us. In the meantime, enjoy my favorite finds from the world wide web this week.

Justin Trudeau is so dreamy. These pictures of him marching in Toronto’s Pride Parade are the best.

I found this article on how to raise brilliant children, according to science incredibly interesting. I’m looking forward to reading the book.

This dress, this dress, and this dress need to come live in my closet.

I’ve seen similar directions before, but it’s always nice to have a refresh/reminder on how to fold a fitted sheet.

How about the super creative way this teen used Splash Mountain to come out? Love.

Michelle Obama learns to Snapchat (from the boys who started the Running Man Challenge).

So now I officially want a bun cuff.

This shirtdress (as seen in the image above), with is actually not something I’d normally consider to be “my style,” is slaying me right now.

How to find out (and delete, if you choose) what Google knows about you.

Did you guys see these hilarious “animal fact” signs that someone posted all over the Los Angeles Zoo? Dying.

This mom photographed her own labor and birth.  Pretty amazing.

I’ve been using essential oils for years, and very recently decided to start sharing them with friends and family. Check out my newest venture.

13 mothers talk about what it’s like to go from one to two kids. I can relate to so much of this.

I’m admittedly not a huge Italian food fan (I know, I’m weird), but I’m pretty stoked to learn that it turns out pasta isn’t as fattening as they thought.

Two of my favorite summertime treats in one: the watermelon margarita.

One Basic Household Item You Need if You Have a Pet

I’ve teamed up with Clorox to bring you some pet health and safety tips for the summer. Over this week and the next I’ll be sharing some info on Facebook and Instagram about household germs and infectious disease prevention. Bottom line for me is, keep it simple!

This post is sponsored by Clorox.

“Simplify the problem of life, distinguish the necessary and the real.” – Henry David Thoreau, 1848

We spend a lot of time in our lives looking for the next biggest thing that’s going to make our lives easier. What’s more efficient? Safer? Better? In doing so, we ironically end up making life ever more cluttered and complicated, piling up more things and creating increasingly complicated rituals that are anything but easy.

I work every day to help make animals healthier, but a big part of doing that means giving people recommendations they’ll actually follow through on because they are easy and effective.

I can give you a textbook on preventing the onset and spread of diseases, but do you really want that? You lead a busy life. It’s hard to follow a 15 page cleaning handbook when you have dogs, kids, and soccer practices to deal with. Let’s simplify things:

  1. Keep your pet safe through routine veterinary care and vaccination.
  2. Keep your environment safe with regular cleaning and disinfecting.

Dogs are messy. They get into messes and spread messes and sometimes that includes bacteria and viruses. Gross. The good news is, you don’t need a closet full of specialized Doggie Cleaning Solutions and Fido Wipes to keep the bugs at bay. All you need is ten minutes of your time and an item you probably already have in your house (just like the one in the photo, which was in my laundry room long before I started this campaign!)

There’s a reason animal shelters and humane societies across the country list bleach as one of their top wishlist items: It works, on everything from nasty bacteria like Salmonella and E.coli to the dreaded viral disease canine parvo. It’s inexpensive. It’s easy:

10 Minutes To a Safer Home

Did you know that a study by NSF International showed pet bowls and  toys were in the top ten most germy items in the house– worse than toilet bowls and cutting boards? If you have pets, you can use Clorox® Regular-Bleach1 at home to sanitize their crates, pet bowls and toys.[1]

  • Disinfect hard non-porous surfaces and accessories with a solution of 1/2 cup product in 1 gallon of water. For pre-wash surfaces, soak or wipe with bleach solution. Allow solution to contact surface for at least 10 minutes. Rinse well and air dry.
  • To sanitize pet food containers, wash bowls with detergent and rinse. Fill bowls with a solution of 2 tsp of Clorox®Regular Bleach1 per gallon of water. Let stand 2 minutes, drain and air dry.

Dexter the Cat is “Feeling Like a Normal Kitty” Thanks to Halo Natural Cat Food

Mary and Dexter the CatHalo Facebook Fan Mary Neuendorf from MN shared with us her story about her cat named Dexter and his Halo natural cat food experience. She says:

This is my sweet boy named Dexter!

“I wanted to leave a post to say THANK YOU HALO, and I’ll explain the reason why.

I rescued Dexter back in October from an amazing No Kill animal shelter named Lucky’s Place. When I first got him home, he had a couple of loose stools, which I thought was normal because he was in a new environment.

Well a couple of weeks passed and he still had loose stools, and was throwing up just about every morning. I got very concerned and took him to the vet and they said he just had worms. After giving him the dewormer, I was hoping that would clear everything up. Turns out, he still was having loose stools, and throwing up.

My vet said he could just have IBS or a sensitive stomach. I was determined to find a better solution so I wouldn’t have to pick up puke every day, and have to wear a mask when I scooped the liter box.

This is when the hunt for a new food started…

I don’t know why it took me so long to try Halo Grain Free Spot Stew but within 2 DAYS the puking stopped and so did the loose stools! I have had Dexter on this food for 2 months now and he has so much more energy, coat is sooooo soft, and most importantly, he is feeling like a normal kitty!!!

If anyone has a cat with a sensitive stomach or possibly IBS I really recommend this food! It has changed Dexter’s and my life completely.

Thanks again Halo Pets!”

Mary, thank you so much for sharing your story and we are happy that Dexter is happy and healthy.

Dog Runs Away Back to Doggie Daycare

Lots of dogs love to go to Doggy Daycare. One dog, however, loves daycare so much that he ran away from home to go visit his friends there!

According to CNN, Riley the golden retriever and his owner were out for a drive one morning when they drove past a group of dogs from the daycare he attends. Riley was excited and happy to see them, reports his owner, Tonia Mosteller. “Riley was crying because he loves to play, he loves happy dogs,” Mosteller told CNN.

But the two went on their way, with Riley whining the whole way home.

Mosteller thought that was the end of it but Riley had other plans. A short time later, Riley was playing in the backyard and decided to take matters into his own paws.

The Fourth of July is one week from today, and I can’t wait. It’s one of my favorite days of the year. To me, it represents everything I love about summer – celebration, friends, sunshine, fireworks, and food. I’m especially excited this year because Robbie gets to stop home from tour on the fourth, so we’ll all be able to celebrate with our friends as a family. And while the plan is to continue to focus on my clean eating routine into July, I will absolutely be taking the fourth off to fully savor as many delicious foods as possible. While searching for some fun food ideas to create and bring to the party we’ll be attending (I am a sucker for holiday themed foods), I came across these delightful looking recipes, so I thought I’d share them here for this summertime edition of 10 Great. While all of these are vegetarian, you could easily incorporate meat into the savory dishes. Enjoy!
