Heat Stroke is No Joke!

While a local news station was out at a park reporting on the death of a bulldog from heat stroke the day before, they came across another dog who was very close to heat exhaustion, if not stroke. This is despite the warning signs at the park entrance.

Though you’d think people would get it by now, some people really don’t. To make matters worse, the reporter spent time talking to the ranger about the dog’s condition and showing them pouring water on him while neglecting to mention the number one thing they should have been doing: calling a veterinary ER. Once the clinical signs kick in, they can be very difficult to reverse without aggressive care and time is of the essence.

Once you’ve seen a dog die of heat stroke, you get really agro about this stuff. It’s horrible. You have my permission to lecture strangers if they’re doing something dangerous like walking their pug on a desert trail in 100 degree weather with no water. It happens every day. I hereby appoint you all members of the Heat Stroke Patrol. Feel free to share the infographic as you see fit.

Be safe out there.

I’m one of those people who needs to take baby steps when transitioning from summer to fall. I don’t rush to Starbucks the day Pumpkin Spice Lattes arrive. I don’t whip out the Halloween decorations in September. I don’t throw on a sweater the first day that the temp dips below 70. And I definitely do not pull out the boots the moment the first colored autumn leaf appears. As you have all heard me say (probably hundreds more times than you wanted to hear it), summer is my soul season, and it’s not easy for me to accept fall’s arrival. I do enjoy change, however, and I’ll admit that getting to add a fall piece or two to my wardrobe in September can be somewhat exciting – if it’s done slowly.

And this, my friends, is why I adore the ankle boot. It’s like the perfect seasonal footwear progression. It’s not a sandal or summertime shoe, but it’s not a cool weather boot either. Plus the ankle boot is a classic in my mind – it looks great with just about everything, and it can take an outfit from blah to chic in an instant. Today I’ve rounded up some of my current favorite ankle boots for fall, as seen in the collage above. The best part is that out of respect for your wallet (you’re going to need that extra cash for all of those PSLs, admit it), each of them is priced under $ 100. Woohoo. I own the Hi Top Back Zip Boots (#2) and wear them at least two or three times a week in the fall. And those black Heeled Ankle Boots (#12) are on my wish list – I think they’d look killer with some light wash distressed jeans and an oversized black or grey button down blouse.

Are you a fan of the ankle boot for fall? Which one here is your favorite?

P.S. Fall fashion is great and everything, but I’d be lying if I wasn’t thinking about the bigger picture today, and on every September 11th. So many years have passed, but my heart remains with the memory of those who lost their lives on that awful day, and their families as well. There is lots of big stuff going on in the world right now in general, and although I don’t specifically talk about it here, it’s always on my mind. Sending out good vibes and positive energy to everyone who could use it – today and everyday.

DYING WOMAN WRITES LETTER TO CAT’S FUTURE FAMILY

susie-cat-lgEvery adoptable pet has a backstory but it’s often a mystery to shelter workers and adopters. But at an animal shelter in Maryland, a sweet cat named Susie comes with a beautiful letter her owner wrote on her behalf before she died.

According to ABC News, the shelter caring for Susie, Montgomery County Animal Services and Adoption Center (MCAS) in Derwood, Maryland, recently made the letter public in the hopes that it will help Susie find her forever home. She’s been at the shelter since May when her late owner’s son brought her in.

“He had said that he could not have the cat where he lived,” said Katherine Zenzano, community outreach coordinator at MCAS. “We assume his mother knew this was going to happen because she wrote a letter to the person that was going to adopt Susie. He gave it to our intake counselor, so that’s now in a file waiting for whoever comes to adopt her, and it will be passed onto them.”
